Jewish Cohort Learning Fellowship Application
Cornell Hillel is offering 10-session and 6-session experiential, conversational cohorts for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. We’re interested in building friendships, creating community, and asking big questions. You know, the big stuff —like Who am I? What communities am I a part of? What is worth committing myself to, and why?

We make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our job is to help you explore the tradition in a supportive space and find your own place, on your terms, in Judaism’s 'Great Conversation'.

**Every cohort learning session is accompanied by dinner.**

The Fine Print - PLEASE READ

We will literally pay you for learning - that's how much we value your time. But here's what you need to know:

10-Session classes...

You're probably** eligible for a $350 stipend by participating in a 10-session class.

  • **Already took a JLF class (or 5)? Amazing! You're eligible for a stipend of $175.
  • **Not Jewish? Unfortunately, JLF is a grant-funded program, and the funding is only available for students who identify as Jewish. If this does not describe you, you are still MORE than welcome to take the class - you just won't be eligible for the stipend. If you're not sure, feel free to be in touch with Rav Talia to discuss.
  • **Attendance: In each course, we build a mini-community, so we take attendance really seriously...
*You can miss up to 2 sessions before you become ineligible for the stipend.
*For each session missed (up to 2), your stipend will be prorated.
*If you have to miss a session, your teacher may be willing to meet one-on-one as a make-up. Definitely ask, and they'll meet with you if they have time.

6-Session classes...

We're offering a $150 stipend!

  • **Already took a cohort learning class? No problem! You're still eligible for the whole stipend.
  • **Not Jewish? Unfortunately, the same stipulation described above still applies.
  • **Attendance: You have 1 excused absence from a 6-session class. After 1 absence, you are no longer eligible for the stipend.
*If you have to miss a session, your teacher may be willing to meet one-on-one as a make-up.

10-Session Classes:

Sex, Love, and Relationships  with Rav Talia & Chloë
[Now Full]
What is the story I have told myself and/or been told about “sex,” “love,” and “relationships” today? How have my opinions, feelings, behaviors, and assumptions around these topics been shaped and informed? How might Judaism be at the table when I explore these stories and questions? We will together create a supportive environment for exploring these questions through diving into Jewish texts - both old and new. LGBTQ-friendly.

6-Session Classes:

This 6-session series explores resilience and antisemitism through the lens of Jewish peoplehood and Jewish experience. This course is designed to support students in claiming positive Jewish identity, even while navigating antisemitism, contemporary discourse around Israel, and the nuances of Jewish experiences in the 21st century.  Students will engage with Jewish diversity, grapple with narratives that harm and marginalize, and celebrate Jewish resilience and joy.

5:30-7pm Location TBD

Israel Through Film 2.0 with Netanel
“Cinema is like a drone, we send it to explore reality and come back to us with insights.” -Dr. Erez Perry, film scholar
Israel is a diverse, intriguing society - But how can we better understand its roots, its population and their everyday life there? Through movies, of course! In this fascinating course, we explore the diversity of Israeli society through film, TV, music and the arts. We will go through 7 different sectors of Israeli society, explore their culture, costumes and different narratives, and ask difficult yet fascinating questions, so by the time that our very own “cinema drone” gets back to us, we get a better, insightful sense of Israel today. (Israel through Film 1.0 is not a required prerequisite)
Thursdays, starting February 8th
5:30-7:30pm Location to be determined

Intro to Kabbalah with Or and Ori
What does it mean to live a spiritual life? What is life's purpose? How do we reach true and lasting satisfaction? Come and discuss all of this and more based on the Kabbalistic teachings of the Baal HaSulam (Rav Yehuda Ashlag) - a prominent teacher of Kabbalah who lived during the 19th-20th centuries. Join this unique fellowship that will discuss our tradition's esoteric teachings about God, mysticism, and spirituality as well as exploring spiritual practices that are based in Kabbalah. The course will include 5 sessions and one immersive (3-6 hours) experience. All streams of Jewish and Jewish-curious students are welcome.

Kol Yisrael: Ethnic Diversity in Israel with Netanel
This series will explore how ethnically diverse communities in Israel navigate "being Israeli" alongside unique identities and particular historical narratives. Exploring questions of identity and inclusion in the context of six ethnic/cultural groups within Israel, we will consider how the values of diversity and uniformity animate the public sphere in Israel and in our own Hillel spaces.
