Earth Day Extravaganza: Invasive Species Removal and Tree Planting

In celebration of Earth Day, the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) and the Groton Invasive Species Committee is seeking volunteers to join us for a day of environmental action through the removal of invasive species in the Groton Town Forest (use this link for driving directions). This event will take place on Monday, April 22nd 2024, from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Volunteers will work to remove common invasive plant species including Japanese barberry, glossy buckthorn, and Oriental bittersweet using hand pulling, shears, shovels, and loppers. To help reduce soil erosion, filter runoff, and increase native biodiversity, volunteers can also help plant native tree and shrub seedlings at the restoration site to replace invasive species that are removed.

This work will be done along a trail on the river's edge, approximately one mile from the main parking area. Upon arrival at the restoration area, there will be some off-trail navigation, but the terrain is relatively flat and the majority of the walk into the site will take place on a firm, cleared trail.

This is a hands-on opportunity to help prevent invasive species from negatively impacting our local watershed, and to get community service hours! Be a part of positive change—sign up now to volunteer and let's protect the Groton Town Forest together!

Registration is required. Meet at the main parking area at the southern end of Town Forest Road in Groton, MA at 2:45 pm.
