2024 VCSS Conference Barbara Johns Youth Change Agent Award

The Virginia Council for the Social Studies (VCSS) is excited to announce its inaugural Youth Change Agent Award. This award is inspired by Barbara Johns and Prince Edward County, Virginia, students’ legacy of challenging systemic oppression and promoting educational equity. The Youth Change Agent Award will honor one K-12 student enrolled in a school in Virginia who exhibits the below characteristics.
 
Award
$250 stipend and recognition at the Virginia Conference for Social Studies annual conference.

Eligibility
  • Attends a K-12 school in the state of Virginia.
  • Displays an interest in History and Social Studies.
  • Contributes to their local community through service efforts.
  • Positively impacts their school climate through equity initiatives.
  • Exhibits leadership capabilities and/or potential.
Criteria
Change agents are those who make such a significant impact that their legacy spans throughout history. Youth are vital to changing the world as we know it, and many are impacting their community daily. Students can inspire their peers and adults by taking informed action for causes they are passionate about, leading and participating in community service, and participating in philanthropic efforts. 

Applications are due by December 15, 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Correspondence selection notification will be sent to our award recipient by December 15, 2023.
