Are you a veteran in New York state interested in agricultural? The Cornell Small Farms Program's "Farm OPS" project is working with the Canandaigua VA Medical Center's Whole Health Program and the EquiCenter Farm to provide agricultural education workshops at no cost to New York state veterans who are enrolled at a Veterans Affairs facility.
Workshop Details: Tracey Testo, Environment and Natural Resource Program Coordinator from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Agroforestry Resource Center, will lead the day to teach participants how to recognize agroforestry values and potentials that may lie in your woods. This day will include a hands-on, outdoor component so please dress appropriately.
During this event, participants will be introduced to:
· The history of NYS forests including past land-use practices that have left us with current opportunities.
· Agroforestry practices with a focus on Forest Farming (i.e. maple, ginseng, mushrooms)
· Utilizing simple forestry tools
· Assessments to measure the potential of forest farming opportunities.
Tracey graduated from SUNY Cobleskill’s Plant Science and Horticulture Bachelor program, has worked on many farms including the world’s largest agroforestry farm focused on wild-simulated ginseng, and currently manages her own small farm with a focus on shiitake mushroom production. Her employment at CCE is multi-faceted, including her role as coordinator of the NYC Watershed Trained Logger Certification Program, co-chair of the NYS Agroforestry Program Work Team, and educator of general forestry and agroforestry topics such as deer browse, mushroom cultivation, ginseng production and foraging classes.
We strongly encourage participants to arrive early, preferably 15-20 minutes prior, to meet the other participants and staff and get situated for the workshop
