VNPC has partnered with StoryCollab to create the Turn the Page initiative and offer a series of digital storytelling workshops. This round of workshops includes a workshop focused on providing a supportive space for maternal healthcare providers to share stories that have impacted them and the care they provide.
StoryCollab’s online digital storytelling workshop will bring together up to ten providers from across Virginia, primarily focusing on those providing care in maternal health deserts.
The workshops take place in 2-hour Zoom meetings each week, over the course of 6 weeks. During this time, providers will develop true personal (first-person “I” voice) stories from their lives as short digital videos.
The online workshop involves a series of 5 group Zoom meetings, individual sessions with a facilitator, and some individual work time by each participant. The workshop is participatory. Those who attend will:
share a story verbally in a Story Circle;
work with facilitators to write their story in a short format;
record the story into a microphone; choose and take photos and video clips or create art to illustrate the story;
and learn to combine these materials into short (2-3 minute) digital videos called “digital stories” using a video editing program.
No prior storytelling or video editing experience is needed.
You may choose to tell any story you wish that reflects your personal experience as a maternal healthcare provider. You might talk about a challenge, something you learned about yourself, a new perspective you gained, something you learned from a mentor, or a patient who impacted you deeply such as a story about a moment or a time when:
a patient impacted you and your future work as a healthcare provider
you saw the impact you had on a patient and their family
you were able to help a patient, or a time when you weren’t able to
you realized that you could have done something differently for a better outcome
You got the support that you needed to do your job well, or a time when you didn’t
You faced a difficult choice
When you saw something not working in the system for someone and you were able to do something about it (or a time when you weren't able to do anything)
