THE BINGHAMTON COMMUNITY DEMANDS FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY
To the administration of Binghamton University and President Harvey Stenger:

We hope this letter finds you well. We hope that, as students, our concerns will be met with respect and discussion rather than dismissal and censorship.

Student contributions including tuition money, labor, and intellectual inquiry maintain the function of and heighten the reputation of Binghamton University. In theory, the public university is an educational center meant to serve the students of its state. It is an institution endowed with the responsibility of molding the future. A university that prioritizes short-term profit over those very students’ hopes for stable, livable futures serves only investors.

In order to re-align the financial behavior of the university with its founding promises, Binghamton University must take seriously the voice of students and incorporate fully demands for transparency and honesty -- or instead actively choose to forfeit the faith of its students, faculty, and all citizens of the state of New York.

As students and members of the Binghamton community, we demand financial transparency from the Binghamton administration concerning the university’s endowment, which according to the 2017-2018 Portfolio is in excess of  $152,600,000. We define financial transparency as the full disclosure of the companies and industries that Binghamton University is directly and indirectly invested in through any means, including the exact amounts of money associated with each. Given the mishandling of the budget and the lack of proof concerning fossil fuel divestment, we feel this is a sensible demand.

Thank you for your partnership in building a globally-minded, engaged, and more excellent Binghamton.

Signed,
