This is a pilot workshop and writing programme for early career stage historical geographers from South and Central America  who would like to participate in a group reflecting on the process of publishing in JHG and /or participate in a structured writing group to work on an individual submission to the Journal of Historical Geography (JHG).

‘Early career’ includes final stage PhD students who have a body of completed research that they are ready to develop for submission to a peer reviewed journal, and established scholars who are within 10 years of completing their PhD.

The Journal of Historical Geography are wanting to encourage submissions to the journal from participants in South and Central America. The journal editors recognise that the journal receives very few submissions from scholars in these regions. The JHG editorial collective is keen to address the structural inequalities that deter authors from submitting, and also address issues that prevent successful pathways to publication within the journal.  We are piloting a workshop programme to learn what activities and opportunities can best support authors as they prepare their submission for the Journal of Historical Geography.

We would like to invite participants to participate in two ways:

STRAND A
Writing for JHG workshops: 30 participants
You want to join a group of participants who are looking to learn about the Journal of Historical Geography by attending sessions which de-mystify the publication process.
You may not have a paper ready to work on, but you are interested in learning more about the Journal for a future submission.  
You want to write in your own time to develop a submission for JHG informed by the process.
You want to share your perspectives around the challenges of publishing in an English medium journal like JHG, and reflect on the activities and support which will help you to develop work for submission.
You want to access a drop in Q&A with JHG editorial collective.

STRAND B
JHG structured writing programme: 10 participants
You can identify a body of completed research that you would like to develop for submission to JHG over a 12 week period.
You want to join a group of participants who are ready to work on a paper for submission to the Journal of Historical Geography and work with them.
You are able to commit to a programme of which offers a structured route to submission during the timeline of the programme.
You want to join a group of participants who are looking to learn about the Journal of Historical Geography by attending sessions which de-mystify the publication process.
You want to share your perspectives around the challenges of publishing in an English medium journal like JHG, and reflect on the activities and support which will help you to develop work for submission.
You are willing to reflect on the process and guide the JHG editorial collective as they learn from the pilot programme in the delivery of future programmes.
You are interested in joining a writing collective to reflect on writing for JHG as part of a structured writing programme.

Programme runs form week starting Monday 20th September. Specific dates to be confirmed once programme places allocated.

The programme is being delivered in English, reflecting the publish language of the journal.

Indicative programme:

STRAND A
Writing for JHG workshops - 30 places
Delivered as 8 x 1 hour workshops over a 3 month period, Mid September – Mid December 2021

Workshop 1 - Publishing in JHG: journal format, processes and pathway of publication

Workshop 2 -  Focus on JHG Workshop: Participant perceptions, challenges and opportunities for writing in JHG as an English medium journal

Workshop 3 - JHG audiences: Who are they now, who might they be in the future? What are they expecting? What challenge is needed to established norms?

Workshop 4 - Situating your research: Locating allied literatures, connecting to international dialogues, locating literatures: Challenges and questions

Workshop 5 - Methods and footnotes: Writing about your methodology in a journal article and using footnotes effectively

Workshop 6 - Presenting your argument

Workshop 7 - Getting ready to submit and what happens next: Writing abstracts, covering letters and highlights and submitting your paper. What happens?  Review process.

Workshop 8 - Planning your next research project: grant applications for historical geography

STRAND B

Applicants for this strand would attend Strand A workshops and also have a place on the JHG structured writing programme, starting in the week commending 20th September.

Stage 1 aim: Complete a draft of outline of paper and submit for feedback
Week 1 - Speed introductions, setting and sharing goals, Peer dialogue and Q & A, 2 hours
Week 2 - Structured writing session – outlining, 3.5 hours
Week 3 - Reflecting on writing for JHG, taking stock of progress and troubleshooting, 2 hours
Week 4 - Structured writing session, outlining, 3.5 hours
Week 5 - Structured writing session, outlining, 3.5 hours, submit outline to mentor
Week 6 - 1 x Individual session on draft outline with mentor, 1 hour

Stage 2 aim: Have a full outline ready to develop into a 1st draft, submit for feedback
Week 7 - Structured writing session – drafting, 3.5 hours
Week 8 - Structured writing session – drafting, 3.5 hours
Week 9 - Structured writing session – drafting, 3.5 hours
Week 10 - Structured writing session – drafting, 3.5 hours
Week 11 - Getting your manuscript ready for review workshop,  3.5 hours
Week 12 - Writing for JHG reflections and next steps, 2 hours
