January 2021
Dear Hoyas,
Before classes start, we are reaching out to offer you the opportunity to set an intention of committing your Spring 2021 semester to being #HoyasforOthers in pursuit of a more racially just, humane, and equitable world by joining our campus-wide Teach the Speech Initiative in honor of Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Tuesday, January 19 at 11:30amEST, you are invited to participate in our annual Teach The Speech Teach-In, an event typically attended by Georgetown faculty and staff and, this year, open to our Hoya community of students.
This year, we are focusing our event on two speeches:
1) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 speech “Our God is Marching On”; and
2) in honor of the late Congressman John Lewis, and in recognition of the pivotal role of students in the Civil Rights movement and current fight for racial justice, Lewis’ unedited speech from the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, given when he was head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
The Teach-In will feature three mini-keynote addresses and be followed by a facilitated Q&A and dialogue among our three speakers. Our first keynote speaker is Fatima Dyfan (C’21), a senior majoring in Government and African-American Studies with a minor in Theatre Performance Studies and former Executive Producer of the Black Theatre Ensemble. Our second invited guest is Michael Collins who served as Chief of Staff for Congressman Lewis for over twenty years. Our third speaker is Professor Aderson Francois, Anne Fleming Research Professor and Director, Institute for Public Representation Civil Rights Law Clinic at Georgetown University.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to infuse these speeches into their educational spaces, such as classes and meetings. Student leaders, we encourage you to program conversation circles with members of your student organization, team, club, residence hall community, or orientation group.
Warmly,
Amena @LGBTQ Center, Andria @CSJ, Jaime @CSE, James and Joselyn @CNDLS, and Maya @OSEI
