There is a multitude of art and craft forms, folk traditions and festivals that have been steadily declining for many decades and are now almost on the verge of disappearing completely. Traditional practices belonging to marginalized communities and faiths are facing a new threat due to the increasedly insular attitude of the majority of the subcontinent. Due to the accelerated urbanisation in the rural parts of India, the circumstances are even worse for the agnostic folk traditions in these areas.
The Dwindling Traditions grant will support the creation of video documentation that showcases the unique narratives, techniques, materials, and cultural significance of such waning art and craft forms, folk traditions and festivals in an effort to develop and digitize a visual archive of such practices. The videos produced through this grant will be made available to the public through online platforms, physical exhibitions, and educational programs. The grant will provide funding of upto INR 2.5 lakhs each to two winning applicants.
Through this grant, it is hoped that these art, craft, and folk traditions will be preserved for future generations, and that the public will gain a greater appreciation for the cultural significance of these unique and valuable traditions.
