General Information for Crew Members

Drama Club is an after-school program designed for students interested in learning more about the many aspects of theatre. Being a backstage crew member gives students the opportunity to involve themselves in our organization without being directly in the spotlight. It is a good introduction to theatre for those who would like to participate strictly behind the scenes. They will gain experience such as: Building sets, helping create props and operating equipment. The backstage crew supports the designers and performers with the running of the show. Members below 6th grade will be taken on as an apprentice, where they will learn under the director, as well as our Stage managers and crew operators. Older and more experienced members will be assigned manager and supervisor positions based on experience and reliability. Drama Club is open to students 4th-12th grade.

What is the job like?

Backstage crew jobs can include:

  • carpentry, to build and repair props and scenery

  • construction: building the set, including any mechanical or moving parts, and making sure they work properly

  • loading, unloading and assembling scenery

  • operating moving scenery (traditionally the person who does this is a 'flyman'). Flying scenery is often not a job on its own, but can be a part of the role of stagehand or theatre mechanist.

  • And so much more!
