Seventh Grade Foreign Language Registration

Congratulations!  Your son/daughter has met the criteria for Middle School Foreign Language.
Foreign language eligibility is determined based on student academic performance in Language Arts and Reading by:

earning at least a “B” in Reading at the end of the 3rd 9 weeks in 6th grade (if applicable),
posting a passing grade in Language Arts at the end of the 3rd 9 weeks in 6th grade,
receiving their 6th grade Reading Teacher’s Recommendation (if applicable),
scoring satisfactorily on the Milestone Language Arts and Reading assessments in 5th grade, as determined by each middle school.

Foreign Language in Douglas County Middle Schools is a two-year sequential academic course. Since Middle School Foreign Language is an academic skill-building course, it is important for students to approach every aspect of the course with seriousness and commitment.

Upon meeting the criteria bulleted below, the student will begin in high school with the second year of a foreign language. Beginning foreign language in Middle School affords Douglas County students the opportunity to develop skills needed to meet the demands of the twenty-first century and continue to a higher proficiency level with advanced high school foreign language study.

Beginning with the graduation class of 2019, i.e. qualifying students in 9th grade during the 2015-2016 school year, and thereafter, Douglas County will award one High School Credit for successful completion of the Middle School Academic Foreign Language Program. Upon meeting the criteria bulleted below, the student will begin high school enrolled in the second year of foreign language unless otherwise determined through the advisement process.

Please be aware of the following information:

Your student must have a passing Foreign Language yearly average for his/her seventh grade year.
AND
Your student must have an 80 or above yearly average in his/her eighth grade year to automatically receive the High School Credit.

If your student has an eighth grade average between 70 and 79, you will have the option to determine whether or not you wish your student to receive the High School Credit.  This option is afforded to parents due to the effect of a 70 to 79 average on student GPA / Scholarship opportunities.
The final 8th grade average will be the grade used on the transcript for forwarding credit to high schools in Douglas County and for GPA purposes.
Decision to accept/not accept foreign language high school credit will be binding as of first day of high school career.
