What is CanSat Ghana?
CanSat Ghana is a foundation (NGO) focused on helping Ghana develop its Space sector through building experimental satellites (CanSats). In the last two years, we have reached 200+ students in Ghana. Our goal is to help students to build and learn about experimental satellites while going through the complete process of an actual Space mission. This 2023, Xavier Space Solutions is working with the Office for Astronomy Development (OAD) and Erictronics to run the first-ever experimental satellite design and build campaign for Senior High Schools in Ghana.
What is a CanSat?
A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a soft drinks can. The challenge for the students is to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system, into this minimal volume. The CanSat is then launched by a rocket, or dropped from a platform, drone or captive balloon. Then its mission begins. This involves carrying out a scientific experiment, achieving a safe landing, and analysing the data collected.
Educational value of the CanSat Ghana Elementary Campaign:
Through the Elementary Campaign, the participating student teams experience all the phases of a real space project, from selecting the mission objectives, designing their CanSat, integrating the components, testing the system, preparing for launch, and analyzing the scientific data obtained. Throughout this process the students:
• learn by doing,
• get acquainted with the enquiry-based methodology that is typical of real-life scientific and technical professions,
• acquire and/or reinforce fundamental Technology, Physics, and programming curricular concepts, understand the importance of coordination and teamwork,
• enhance their communication skills.
Final phase of the competition...
By 28th February, we had the selected students team and took them through 9 months of training in astronomy, physics, electronics and programming.
We are currently in the last phase of the competition and are preparing for the finals! Here students will battle each other and the odds to justify their inclusion within this esteemed competition and will meet toe to toe on 31st October 2023!
