Resolution Declaring Support for Alaska’s Economic and Transportation Security, Condemning Federal Actions That Endanger Relations with Canada, and Urging Immediate State and Federal Action
WHEREAS, Alaska relies on stable trade, transportation, and diplomatic relations with Canada for essential goods, supplies, and economic activity; and
WHEREAS, the recent threats of economic tariffs and territorial annexation made by President Trump and his administration toward Canada have led to heightened tensions, resulting in Canada’s response to boycott goods and threaten taxes on the land route to Alaska; and
WHEREAS, such actions directly harm the people of Alaska by disrupting critical supply chains, increasing economic hardship, and jeopardizing the well-being of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, Alaskans recognize the long-standing peace, friendship, and economic cooperation between Alaska and Canada and oppose any federal actions that threaten this relationship; and
WHEREAS, the people of Alaska deserve to have their voices heard in opposition to policies that harm our state’s economy, infrastructure, and international standing;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
- We, the undersigned citizens of Alaska, condemn the Trump administration’s aggressive economic and territorial rhetoric against Canada and recognize that such actions have directly contributed to the current crisis;
- We call upon Alaska’s congressional delegation to take swift action in opposing harmful federal policies, advocating for diplomatic resolutions, ensuring Alaskan access to necessary goods and trade routes, and restoring our longstanding peaceful relationship with Canada;
- We support local efforts to maintain friendship with Canada, including direct sister city relationships; and
- A copy of this resolution shall be sent to Alaskan municipalities, the Alaska State Legislature, Alaska’s congressional delegation, and relevant Canadian officials.
