2023 College Experience and Near Peer Mentor Application
We are excited to announce that we have an exciting program for juniors/seniors in high school this summer 2023 with support from the Level Up program of San Diego Unified School District!

WE INVITE YOU TO ENGAGE IN A SUMMER COLLEGE EXPERIENCE (including engaging as Enrichment facilitator/near-peer mentor) for middle school students!

The experience is from June 20 to July 15 (plus the conference on August 5)

High school students will spend four weeks at the University of San Diego exploring different aspects of the university experience, including class sessions, research experiences, strategies for success, and leadership skills for supporting younger students. They will be near-peer mentors of middle school students during a STEAM Academy and STEAM Youth and Community Conference. The program includes both academic-oriented instruction that stresses investigation, inquiry, discovery, and application, as well as the engagement of students in culturally responsive experiences, formal and informal learning spaces relevant to their communities, encouragement of a growth mindset, development of meta thinking practices, and support for personal reflection and psychosocial maturation through mentors and role models. The result is not just the ability to accumulate facts and experiences, but real world skills in adaptation, resilience, resistance, innovation, navigation, productive struggle, and transition.

The schedule is:
  • In individualized Orientation (sometime in June 2023)
  • College, research and class experiences: Mondays through Fridays June 20 - June 28, 9am to 5pm
