Overview of process to begin volunteering:
Experienced interpreters -
A passing score on a national certification exam (CCHI/NBCMI) or the Medical Interpreter Proficiency Qualification (MIPQ) exam by LanguageStat satisfies our training requirements.
New volunteers -
To ensure volunteers are prepared for patient interpretation settings, those who have not completed an exam are required to fulfill the following professional training:
1. Demonstrate language proficiency (We recommend Parrot Test for Spanish or email volunteer@vocalizecolumbus.org to learn about testing options for other languages)
2. Enroll and complete a 40 hour medical interpretation workshop such as TCI or equivalent training such as interpretation coursework through UTSA
After completing this survey, please send your documentation of exam completion or professional training to
volunteer@vocalizecolumbus.org and we will connect you with upcoming clinical opportunities. To support our interpreters, we are allocating funds to help cover the costs to become a volunteer.

Q: What exactly is "medical interpreting" and how is it "remote"?
A: The language barrier can often hinder effective physician-patient communication. Medical interpreters alleviate this challenge and improve health outcomes by acting as a mediator between the healthcare team and patients. Remote interpretation allows trained interpreters to provide this valuable service over video platforms like Zoom and have flexible scheduling.
Q: My pre-health/pre-med advisers have mentioned that I need to get “clinical experience” or “clinical exposure” before professional school. Does this experience count as clinical volunteering?
A: Yes! serving remotely as a medical interpreter can apply as clinical volunteering. Interpreters have the opportunity to interact with patients and healthcare professionals, not to mention that telemedicine has expanded significantly during the pandemic.
