Jeunesses Musicales Canada's professional opera tours

Every year, Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JM Canada) sends a professional opera production on tour throughout Ontario, the Atlantic provinces, and Quebec. Musicians in the early stages of a professional career are invited to audition for the role of their choice.

Professional Production and Tour Dates

PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP: From July 6 to August 2, 2021, inclusively, including 3 performances (exact dates and places to be confirmed).

EAST TOUR: From October 4th, 2021 to November 8, 2021, including a week of pre-tour rehearsals.

WEST TOUR: From March 28, 2022, to April 26, 2022, including a week of pre-tour rehearsals.

*JM Canada reserves the right to modify production and tour dates.

JM Canada auditions are held through videos. We ask for the pieces listed below, made accessible via YouTube links. * If you are auditioning for more than one role, please learn and record the prescribed aria for each character.

All audition videos must be high-quality with excellent audio, shot from one angle with a single fixed camera (no zooming, no tilting, no panning). Videos must not be edited, enhanced or modified in any way.

Please identify each video with the name of the piece and the name of the candidate, and mention the name of the piano accompanist in the description.

You can submit one (1) YouTube link that includes two (2) works, or two (2) separate links.

1. From "Dans cet asile sacré" until "les deux coupables" - Exerpt, act 2 no 10
2. Two (2) contrasting French arias

Pianist

1. A piece for solo piano;
2. C’est toi, toi qu’enfin je revois… Au fond du temple saint (Act 1, no 2), played while singing;
3. Intermission (Act 3, no 11), to the entrance to Zurga;
4. Final (Act 3, no 16), played while singing.

Selection Criteria

Candidates must send the registration form and payment before the deadline;

Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;

Candidates must be at the beginning of their professional careers;

Candidates must be singers or piano accompanists;

Candidates must be 32 years old or less on November 20, 2020.

Selection Process

1. All audition applications will be reviewed by the selection committee. Eliminated candidates will be notified by email.

2. The selection of artists for the JMC 2021-2022 opera tour will be done by the end of February 2021.
