Mayor Lori Lightfoot is refusing to bargain over numerous key learning issues, relying on a 1995 law passed by Republicans. The law makes Chicago the only place in Illinois where educators can’t bargain over issues like class size. City Council should pass an ordinance directing the mayor to bargain for the schools we need. They should propose to tax the rich, the Lasalle Street exchanges exchanges and all of the many other hugely profitable Fortune 500 corporations based in Chicago to fund the education our students deserve. The Progressive caucus should lead the way in fighting for this ordinance against the political establishment.
