The Junior Hewlett Fire Department is open for ages 12 - 17
Information on the Hewlett Junior Fire Department program
This program was established in 1989 by members of the Hewlett Fire Department, to provide firefighting and EMS education to local and neighboring area boys and girls ages 12 to 17, hoping that the training would inspire a career in the Volunteer Fire and EMS service.
Over the years this program has developed in both size and education. Teaching skills that are beneficial in both life and on the fire ground, for example; being able to work as a team, and handling themselves in emergency situations. This program has been accepted as one of the school districts middle school and
high school community service participation programs.
Meeting once a month as a department, a board of officers from the group supervises and discuss all matters, such as training, field trips, fund raising and community service.
The members of department choose which of the fields they are mostly interested in, firefighting or EMS, and attend monthly training. This allows for smaller class size and allowing more time for hands on and individual education. Members interested in both are allowed to attend both classes. Monthly combined drills are also provided as well.
This is a list of just some of the classes that are taught by our well trained advisors and members:
- Basic fire science
- Equipment and operations of firefighting
- CPR and Public Access Defibrillator
- Basic Emergency life support
All members are invited to attend the weekly adult department and company training. In addition, we have joint drills with other junior Fire Departments and have joined organizations such as the Firemen's association of the State of New York and the Nassau County Junior Fire Department association. This will further their education and training as well as meeting other youths from all over the state with similar interest.
