Sagamok Volleyball League Rules and Regulations

Rules for Gym Use:

·       Players must wear clean non-marking running shoes.

·       No smoking, alcohol or drugs are allowed in the gymnasium.

·       Players are expected to clean up after themselves, please do not leave any garbage behind.

 Game Format:

·       A team is allowed to play with 4 people on the court. Anything less than 4 results in a forfeit

·       If a team does not meet the minimum number of players at 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, they forfeit the first set.  Forfeits are recorded as 21-0 in the standings.

·       If they do not meet the minimum team requirements at 25 minutes past the scheduled start time, they forfeit (AKA default) the entire game (all 6 points). However, please split up bodies and play for fun anyway.

·       Each game consists of 3 sets. All 3 sets will go to 21. You must win by 2.

·       For each set won, the team will receive 2 points. These points will accumulate throughout the season.

·       Teams that default twice will be put under review and may be suspended. Please call around and try to find subs and show up with as many players as you can, even if you think you’re short.

·       Must be 12 years or older to play.

Sagamok Volleyball League General Safety Rules:

·       All players are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the game start time. These 15 minutes should be used to sign-in, change clothing/shoes, stretch, and any other pre-game preparations.

·       Each Participant is responsible for his/her own Health and Safety.

·       No loose jewelry.

·       This league is RECREATIONAL and has been organized for individuals to have fun and to become more physically active. Participants in the league will have varying degrees of volleyball experience and it is expected that those more experienced players be patient and supportive of beginners while they learn the rules of the game and improve their skills.

·       Bullying and harassment is not acceptable or tolerated within the Sagamok Volleyball League. All participants will be treated in a fair and respectful manner.

a.      Bullying and harassment: Includes any inappropriate conduct or comment by a person towards a participant that the person knew or reasonably ought to have known would cause that person to be humiliated or intimidated.

All participants are expected to:

1.     Refrain from engaging in any form of bullying and or harassment of other participants

2.     Report if bullying and harassment is observed or experienced

·       Team Captains and or the program coordinators have the right to ask an individual to leave the facility/league if their behavior is un-sportsman like and or threatens the safety of themselves and or others.

·       Until the league can grow enough to separate into two different skill level groups, please come to an agreement with your opponents before the match on the level of hitting that should be involved. It is up to the two team captains to decide this and communicate it to their teammates.

Setting up Equipment, Keeping Score and Calling Fouls:

·       The program coordinators and or volunteers will be in charge of setting up any equipment prior to games

·       The program coordinator will record the score at the end of each set

·       Please keep in mind that the referees may be staff and or volunteers who may be new to this role. Please be patient and supportive to them. Players can help by calling their own fouls as well as if the ball was in or out on their side of the net.

a.      An opposing team may politely point an issue out if they think something was missed as sometimes not everyone will know all of the rules. Generally, teams should NOT call fouls against their opponents. Obvious fouls are: carries, double hits, touching the net, and going under the net

b.     If a foul is called, this results in stoppage in play and a point for the opposition.

·       If a disagreement occurs regarding a rule, call a re-serve

The Serve

·       Server must serve from behind the end line until after contact

·       Ball may be served underhand or overhand

·       Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve

·       One server may serve the ball only 5 times consecutively. If the team retains service after 5 points scored by this one server, the team must rotate to a new server but will retain the serve.

·       Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point

·       First game serve is determined by ‘rock, paper, scissors’, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser

·       Serve must be returned by a bump or volley only. No attacking or blocking a serve (ex. No blocking or Spiking a serve)

Scoring

·       Rally scoring will be used.

·       There will be a point scored on every score of the ball.

·       Offense will score on a defense miss or out of bounds hit.

·       Defense will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve into the net.

·       Game will be played to 21 pts.

·       Must win by 2 points.

Rotation

·       Team will rotate each time they win the serve

·       Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner

·       There shall be 4-6 players on each side.

Playing The Game

·       Teams will switch sides after each set

·       Maximum of three hits per side

·       Any player can attack from anywhere on the court

·       Player may not hit the ball twice in succession

·       Ball may be played off the net

·       A ball touching a boundary line is good

·       Players can contact the ball with any part of the body, including below the waist, however, please use your feet as a last resort for safety reasons

·       If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play

·       A player must not block or attack a serve

Sagamok Volleyball League - Basic Rule Violations
