Registration EED IDEA Webinar-Dr. Noll
Thanks for registering the IDEA Webinar Series: Inclusive Teaching Practices in Engineering Education. This series aims to have an open discussion with the academic community about the process of identifying, understanding, and breaking down barriers to participation and belonging in engineering education.  Each webinar will focus on different elements of the IDEA values, such as inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.

IDEA values to be covered: disability history, race, and learning environments

Speaker: Dr. Steven Noll

Title: Who is Ed Roberts?  And why does he matter?

When: Friday, October 15th, 2021 | 11:45 AM to 12:45pm EST

Summary: Using the story of Ed Roberts, a seminal figure in the disability rights movement, as a "hook," this presentation examines how and why the history of disability in the US matters to everyone today.

Short Bio: Dr. Steven Noll is a Master Lecturer at the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He has a Ph.D. & an M.A. in history & an MEd in special education (all from UF).  He has taught history at UF since 1992.  He taught special ed in the public schools of Alachua County for 28 years before coming to UF to teach full-time in 2004. He was the DRC Faculty Fellow in the academic year 2020-2021.

He has published three books: Feeble-Minded in our Midst (1995); Mental Retardation in America (2004); and, most recently, Ditch of Dreams: The Cross-Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida’s Future (2009). Ditch of Dreams started through a grant from the State of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection and was researched and written in collaboration with Professor David Tegeder. Noll is currently working on two books, one on the 1977 Disability Rights Protests and the other on the continuing controversy over the proposed removal of the Rodman Dam from the Ocklawaha River.

This event is thanks to a collaboration between the Engineering Education Department and the UF ASEE student chapter. If your department is interested in collaborating in these efforts, please get in touch with Dr. Sindia Rivera-Jiménez at rivera.jimenez@eng.ufl.edu.

A calendar invitation will be sent later after registration. For questions, contact Dr. Sindia Rivera-Jiménez at rivera.jimenez@eng.ufl.edu.
