Habitat Restoration Initiative
The Habitat Restoration Initiative (HRI) is a recently formed grassroots, volunteer-driven project that is working with approval from the Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation Department to clear, plant, and maintain the weed-filled hillsides and rocky areas on the east and west sides of Hyde Park along Gillham Road, 36th Street to 38th Street.
The goal of this project is to eliminate the need for the Parks Department to spray glyphosate herbicide in these areas. The ony areas of the park affected by this plan are the bare or rocky areas that resist mowing and require herbicide to maintain.
This is a pilot project. Once we've proven this approach successful, we hope to see it implemented it on Parks land city-wide.
Supported by the Pilgrim Center (we installed and maintain the Pilgrim Labyrinth & Butterfly Garden in this same section of Hyde Park), Habitat Restoration Initiative is in the planning phase.
