MEDICAL BRIGADE
Our mission is to work with licensed medical professionals and community health workers to provide comprehensive health services by setting up mobile medical clinics in rural communities with limited access to health care. Volunteers have the opportunity to assist during the triage and intake of patients, shadow doctors during consultations, assist dentists in performing teeth extractions, facilitate educational workshops, and help pack medications in the pharmacy under the direction of our on the ground pharmacist. This 9 day medical brigade will also include a 3 day public health component, where brigaders will be assisting local community members with improving the infrastructure within homes. These projects include constructing pilas, or water storage units, and latrines, or outhouses with an underground septic tank for families, in order to prevent the spread of infectious diseases that are commonly found in contaminated water.
Trip Logistics
Cost: ~$2,000 ($990 individual contribution + airfare)
Brigade Location: Honduras
Brigade dates: Summer 2020 (May 24th- May 30th, 2020)
Requirements
As a member of GMB at Berkeley, you are expected to attend twice-monthly, 1-hour member meetings, and participate in club publicity and fundraising events. During these meetings, we will discuss club and trip logistics, cultural competency, medical training, fundraising and gathering brigade supplies. During the cultural competency sessions, we will discuss valuable background knowledge – political, economic, and cultural – that is essential before traveling to Honduras. These discussions will serve as an opportunity for brigaders to discuss various global public health issues and, more specifically, what can be done about many of the observed diseases in Central America and West Africa. We also encourage club members to attend social and fundraising events that will be held throughout the semester as opportunities to bond before attending the brigade.
