RYA youth stage 1, 2, 3 or 4 each comprise two days. We charge just £80 which includes an RYA log book. Course dates may be changed or cancelled by the Principal, including for weather or volunteer instructor availability, or insufficient demand. In these cases, we will refund or defer you to the next course date.
RYA Stage 1 is for complete novices age 8 to 16, but does require confidence in the water, nominally being able to swim 20m.
RYA Stage 2: Requires RYA Stage1 skills: child can already rig a youth boat with supervision, launch and recover. Can sail across the wind and turn, adjusting sails. A season sailing with Parent supervised Juniors Sailing Group will usually be sufficient to join an RYA Stage 2 course:
RYA Stage 3 and 4 are improver courses in single hander, and double handed dinghies respectively. See our club website for details.
All RYA courses have a minimum age of 8 years, but not older than 18 at the time of training. Children 16 or over may also join adult level 3 and advanced courses.
To attend you must have:
- Be a club member, or registered child of a Club member
- a suitable dinghy buoyancy aid
- suitable clothing including non-slip footwear (nothing fancy, trainers are OK)
- sun cream, hat and sunglasses (in case the weather is hot!)
- change of clothes
and you must be:
- in good health, reasonably agile, and fit for moderately strenuous activity.
- water confident and be able to swim at least 25m (using a buoyancy aid if necessary).
For most youth sailors, a shortie wetsuit will make dinghy sailing more comfortable even in warmer weather.
Off season (October-March) a full wet suit or dry suit is required due to the water temperature.
