Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) provides academic support services, including tutoring, to help students succeed in their college courses. Through ongoing training and mentoring, PVCC tutors learn a process to guide tutoring sessions and strategies to address the needs of different learners. Rather than instructing students or knowing all the answers to students’ questions, tutors model strategies of successful learners: asking questions, acknowledging when they are unsure of themselves and, among things, demonstrating how to use the many resources available to them—instructors, notes, peers, textbooks, and others—to complete their classwork more confidently.
