LSII Data Buy Survey

NASA is interested in receiving your opinion on the topic of “Data Buys” as a mechanism for acquiring new data that advance our ability get a sustained lunar presence on the lunar surface.  We would like your comments on two types of data, the first is acquired as a by-product of landing on the Moon.  The second are new data sets, that will likely require a specific instrument to be flown either in orbit or to the lunar surface.

We also welcome any general comments on the topic of data buys, either as a potential customer, or provider. Responses to this survey will not be shared outside of NASA.

For questions, comments or to have further detailed discussions, please contact Brenda Clyde (APL LSII Project Manager) via email at brenda.clyde@jhuapl.edu.

1.      By-Product Data

This refers to data that is acquired as part of a landing on the Moon.  Examples include environmental data (e.g. radiation, thermal etc.), descent & landing imagery, landing and post-landing effects (e.g. plume/surface interactions), and technology/systems performance (e.g. navigation or communications performance).

What data sets most interest you and why?

For each option selected, provide additional rationale for why the data is important/needed.

Are there data sets a lander would naturally acquire but you need a variation of, e.g. higher spatial resolution, higher cadence of collection, or acquiring at a time separate from the landing phase, as in a post-landing panorama, or monitoring surface operations?

What characteristics of the data are most important to you when considering purchasing data?

For each option selected, provide additional rationale for why the data is important/needed.
What region of the moon are you most interested in data from?
For each option selected, provide additional rationale for why the data is important/needed.
When does the data need to be captured?
For each option selected, provide additional rationale for why the data is important/needed.

New Data Sets

New data sets would be needed for data that will require a dedicated instrument to be flown, e.g high-resolution topography.  These data could be obtained either from orbit, or the surface.  In the comments section below please describe  the data to be collected, the reason for wanting the data set, and if there are quality requirements too, e.g. a certain spatial resolution, or spectral range etc.
How do you establish the value of the data or priority for collection?
Who should own & distribute the data?
