Planetarium Educational Programming Survey
As a teacher at a planetarium that is part of a public school system, I am continuously striving to find pre-recorded full-dome shows/movies/films (hereafter referred to as shows) whose content meshes with the standards that our district uses to guide science curriculum development. Unfortunately, although I can find shows that I can force to fit into the curriculum for various grade/age levels (such as Earth, Moon and Sun), there are no shows that are a great fit for teaching the standards for each age/grade level while also providing students with a beautiful planetarium experience. Frequently, there is too much content, too little content or the level of the content is either too high or too low for the grade/age level with which I am working.

Out of frustration with trying to match planetarium shows to the curriculum, I recently had a conversation with a producer about creating shows whose content would mesh with the standards for each grade/age level. The shows would provide students with a 15 - 25 minute, quality experience that reinforces the standards at the level required by the standards and at the level of the student's understanding.

However, before moving forward, I would like to gather information regarding the demographics of planetarium audiences and the educational programming needs of other planetarians so that we can gauge the demand for educational shows that meet the standards being used for each grade/age level and determine project feasibility. If you could please respond to the following questions, I would appreciate it. The survey is being distributed through several different avenues, so please respond only once.

Please note - I am collecting identifying information so that I can contact you for clarification of your responses, if needed. The survey itself should take approximately 15 - 20 minutes. If, at any time, you decide you would rather not respond, feel free to stop answering questions.

Thank you for your consideration. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at roberali@wcps.k12.md.us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alicia Robertson

Name *
Planetarium Name (optional)
In what country is your planetarium located? *
Is your planetarium a part of a public or private school system? *
Does your planetarium host school groups for field trips? *
If you do host school groups, which grade/age levels do you see most frequently? *
Do you conduct lessons for school groups that follow your country's science standards/competence aims/core curriculum? *
If you answered No to the above question, please skip this question.

If you answered Yes to the above question, do your standards/competence aims/core curriculum have a particular name by which they are known so that I could review them? If you have a link to your standards/competence aims/core curriculum, please add it to your response.

Example - in the United States, my school district uses the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) - https://www.nextgenscience.org/.

*Throughout the remainder of the survey, these standards/competence aims/core curriculum will simply be referred to as standards.
Which planetarium shows do you use most frequently for school groups, for what grade/age level do you use them and with which standards do you use them?

Example using the United States NGSS Standards: Earth, Moon and Sun - Grade 5, 5-ESS1-2; One World, One Sky - PreK, no NGSS standards.

*Please use whatever coding is associated with your standards.
*
For the planetarium show(s) you listed above, rate the relationship between the show content and standards with which you use it from 1 - 5, with 1 being the weakest tie and 5 being the strongest tie.

Example: Earth, Moon and Sun - 4 (designating a relatively strong tie between the show content and the standards)
What is your annual planetarium show budget? *
Would you consider spending a portion of your annual budget on planetarium shows that are specifically designed to be used with school students? *
If you answered No to the above question, skip this question.

If you would consider spending a portion of your annual budget on planetarium shows that are specifically designed to be used with school students, what would your budget be, per show?

If you skipped the question above, skip this question as well.

If you would consider spending a portion of your annual budget on planetarium shows that are specifically designed to be used with school students, for how long would you like the show license to last?
