Summary
Through funding from the Maryland Department of Health, the Kent County Health Department is making 8 mini-grants of $5,000 available to schools, community and faith-based organizations or businesses.

Background
Kent County has higher rates of youth tobacco/vape use than Maryland. Electronic devices (Vapes/Juuls, etc.) are overwhelmingly the most common product used.

To address this ongoing issue, Kent County Health Department seeks to partner with trusted organizations in the community to expand the reach of our awareness and education efforts.
Project Focus
There are two types of projects that will be funded:
  1. Tobacco Enforcement The funded community based organization will provide outreach and education to retailers to promote awareness of and compliance with tobacco sales laws for tobacco and Electronic Smoking Devices. This project will require that the awardee organization visit all licensed tobacco retailers in the county and educate store owners, managers and clerks on the Tobacco 21 Law.  This project will complement existing education and compliance checks provided by the county Tobacco Inspector.  (1) mini-grant of $5,000 is available.
  2. Youth/Adult Education  Community and Faith-Based Organizations that reach youth will be trained as Community Leaders, and will educate their organization, their clientele and the greater community to reduce initiation of tobacco/nicotine products among youth, educate on secondhand smoke/vape, tobacco-free homes, etc.   (7) mini-grants at $5,000 are available.
