REGISTER: Somatic Sabor with Marina Magalhães
Olá! Hola! Hello!

Thank you for your interest in the Somatic Sabor Workshop Series with Marina Magalhães.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Somatic Sabor is a brand-new dance workshop from seasoned dance-maker, Marina Magalhães, that revels in the intersections between modern/post-modern dance and social dances of the Latin & African diasporas. Threaded by elemental principles--rootedness (earth), fluidity (water), breath (air), and rhythm (fire)--these dance traditions are brought together harmoniously and playfully, allowing dancers to experience new and exciting possibilities for movement in their bodies. Where somatics meets sabor, ritmo meets floorwork, and rigor meets play... meet us there!

Please note--this is an intermediate/advanced-level dance class and prior dance experience (especially in modern/post-modern styles) is highly encouraged

ABOUT MARINA
Marina Magalhães is a border-crosser, bridge-builder, and dance-maker from Brazil living on unceded Tongva land, currently known as Los Ángeles. Her choreography has been called, “stirring... hypnotic,” by the LA Times and, “riveting... a physical and emotional feat,” by South Africa’s Creative Feel Magazine. Magalhães is a recipient of grant awards from Creative Capital, MAP Fund, Doris Duke Foundation, California Arts Council, as well as the LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography. She has shared her work at renowned theaters like The Ford (LA), Bowery Ballroom (NYC), CounterPulse (San Francisco), Centre Chorégraphique National (Montpellier), The Wits Theatre (Johannesburg), and nightclubs and living rooms around the world. As a performing artist, she has worked long-term with CONTRA-TIEMPO and Viver Brasil dance companies, and has been a featured guest artist in works by Bessie Award-winning choreographers Joya Powell, Marjani Forté-Saunders, and the legendary Bill T. Jones. As a community-rooted teacher and cultural organizer, she has led countless pedagogic initiatives dedicated to sharing dance as a tool for racial and healing justice—most notably, the beloved former Dancing Diaspora platform. As an academic-interventionist, she has taught at UCLA, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, and is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Scripps College. Magalhães holds a B.A. degree from UCLA’s Department of World Arts & Cultures/Dance and an M.F.A. degree in Dance from University of the Arts.
