Jure Aleksejev - AGAINST PHILOSOPHY (info in order)
...No one has been able to show me exactly what philosophy is so good at that it deserves such a privileged position. When I wanted to see the great works of philosophy, comparable to the great achievements of science, I never got my hands on a material object that would make life easier for people, or a description of an ingenious process, or an impressive device; rather, they directed me to a text that was supposed to contain large but purely theoretical contributions. And as a rule, these texts turned out to be complicated and boring (not always, but usually), and often conflicted with other texts of equal (attributed) importance, with the findings of science, and sometimes even with themselves. When I found certain conclusions weak and demanded material, experimental evidence, I was bombarded with words as artfully complicated and as shaky as what they purported to support. Of course, I soon realized that with some practice I could create such a verbal flood myself even when I had nothing to actually say, and I often amused my friends by finding "philosophical" implications in ordinary objects or applying art-critical theories to newspaper articles and threatening literature.

All this led me to think that the world of philosophy is something that is not based on its actual usefulness or necessity, but originates more from the aggressiveness of its authors, the effect of the emperor's new clothes, and the consequent rejection of any criticism of this field." (Jure Alekseev, from the Introduction)

About the author: Jure Aleksejev was born in 1992 in Maribor and is currently studying mechanical engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maribor. Because of his essays, he is often mistaken for a "young philosopher", which is one of the reasons why he decided to publish the present text. In 2011, his collection of essays, A Fistful of Essays, was published by Frontier. He is passionate about the history of railways and the history of science in general.
