Introduction
The Summer internship for Indigenous peoples in Genomics - Aotearoa is an initiative to build capacity amongst Māori students and communities.
What is it?
The SING Aotearoa internship programme is a week-long residential programme that provides participants with knowledge and experience in wet-labs (biological samples, DNA), dry labs (computer analysis, biostatistics) and simulation labs (cultural and ethical scenarios). SING2024 will be held in Whangarei from Mane (Monday) 22nd  – Paraiere (Friday) 26th of January 2024. We do require those living out of Whangarei to travel on Rātapu (Sunday) the 21st. Participants who are accepted into the programme are expected to remain in the programme for the entire week.
Who can apply?
There are 20 fully funded (meals, travel** and accommodation are paid for by the SING-Aotearoa programme) internship positions available for SING2024, therefore there will be a selection process as places are limited. Please be aware that accommodation will include twin shared rooms meaning you will be sharing a room with another.

The programme is open to Māori (tauira, kaitiaki, kaipakihi) wanting to better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with genomic research as well as key technical, cultural and ethical issues.  We encourage applications from University students in any discipline as well as people with a strong Iwi, community or business background. An understanding of genetics is useful but not necessary for attendance in this programme.  Applications close on  Friday the 10th of November

**(NZ domestic travel bus/train/flights. Petrol vouchers considered.)

Why should I attend?
In recent years there has been significant advances in the fields of genetics and genomics and an increasing focus on Māori populations and indigenous species. All research conducted in Aotearoa New Zealand should involve consultation with Iwi/Māori so it is important that we understand enough about the technical, ethical and cultural issues to engage in robust discussions during that process.  The SING Aotearoa programme will allow you to develop your understanding alongside some of the best researchers in New Zealand.
Other opportunities
The SING Aotearoa programme is modelled on an existing SING programme running in the USA (http://conferences.igb.illinois.edu/sing/home). We have established an exchange with SING-USA and provide opportunities for Māori interns to attend that programme.  Interns will be able to become SING Alumni, receive updates and opportunities for scholarships, and participate in research activities.
