Case Study: You are a member of summer staff for Spark'Dwell. Each Monday you lead a group through a poverty simulation. As part of this simulation, one or two individuals with lived experience of homelessness accompany the group. At, Spark'Dwell we call these folks "Dwelling Counselors." These Dwelling Counselors serve as guides during the simulation, helping the group navigate bus routes and social services. As you walk by the bus station, a man yells at your Dwelling Counselor: "Hey man, what are you doing with all those kids? I wouldn't trust you with no one." Your counselor yells back: "Get the hell away. These are my kids." Later, as you walk by a group of women having lunch, the guide makes an inappropriate comment about a woman's breasts. Most of the youth and adult chaperones hear both of these comments. How would you respond to this situation? Keep in mind that these Monday experiences are the first time our campers and their adult chaperones get the opportunity to interact with our Dwelling counselors. (If you have seen this case study before and served on summer staff previously, please share a memorable pilgrimage that you were able to feel personal growth.)
