When to apply:
In order for us to send an application to Juneau the students must meet this criteria (via the application & a parent interview by a Bethel Migrant Recruiter):
•
The children need to travel 20 mi. or more away from their residence (We make a map on Google Maps. If they go by boat, we map river miles.)
•
They need to stay overnight 7 nights or more (in a 365 day period) --- These nights can be split up, such as weekend trips. The students have to camp with an adult in order to qualify. If they are 14 yr. or older, they can supervise themselves. No day trips (even if it's 23 hrs. doing subsistence)
•
NO hunting (This is a big one that confuses people. LKSD does not make the rules. It's a federal rule.)
•
Activities: only fishing, berry picking, agriculture (sour dock, rhubarb, fiddleheads, etc.) or commercial logging
•
Parents provide examples of how subsistence helps financially (on application &/or in the interview)
**You can apply for children 0-5 years old also.**
If any of these criteria are not met we do not send an application to Juneau, because we know they will reject the request. Once Juneau notifies us that your children are approved, we will notify the school.
