CIWEM survey on a strategy for bioresources
Biosolids, (or bioresources as referred to by Ofwat) are a valuable resource, or by-product of wastewater treatment. Within the UK, sewage sludge is typically treated using anaerobic digestion and the treated biosolids produced are primarily recycled to agricultural land.

The regulatory regime for sludge and biosolids reflects its interactions with land, air and water and the water industry is required to meet a diverse range of evolving and incrementally changing regulatory requirements.

CIWEM together with Atkins is working with Water UK, the water industry, its regulators and other stakeholders to develop a long-term bioresources strategy. This will provide greater certainty around the long-term approach for managing sludge and biosolids and support the delivery of national policies, improved environmental outcomes, better planning and investment decisions as well as the development of a productive market for biosolids and bioresources.

This survey is your opportunity to help develop the strategy. We want to know the views of stakeholders and the survey will help us explore the drivers for change, the policy framework and the challenges and opportunities surrounding the management of sludge and biosolids. It will also explore aspirations for the future and relevant treatment technologies and recovery options for biosolids.

The survey is designed to take between 20-30 minutes and is primarily for professionals that understand, are involved, or are interested in biosolid management. We can only accept online responses.

We appreciate your views - thank you in advance for contributing to this important project.
