The zodiac is an ancient way of making meaning, telling stories, and building myth. It uses symbols and archetypes to articulate, explain, interpret, and transform. It is one of the most fun ways to ask questions about quality, difference, and specifics: How is April different than May? How is a ram different than a bull? What do the eyes do that the mouth doesn’t?

In this class, we will dig into the first three zodiac signs—one per class—and use them to spark and guide our writing. We’ll reach into what the specific qualities of each sign can generate on the page: types of character, genres, themes. How about Aries for sex and battle scenes; Taurus to write food, clothing, the body; and Gemini to write dialogue? For each sign/class, I’ll have a little lecture, with suggested books and films, and writing exercises. We’ll have time for sharing writing and critique. The aim is to hang out with each sign as if it were a person, a vibe, an atmosphere, and let it take us somewhere.

Note this is a writing class, not an astrology class. A basic knowledge of astrology (signs, planets, houses, vibes) will be helpful but not required. Any kind of writer is welcome: Poets, screenwriters, graphic novelists, memelords!

13 people maximum, first come, first served. I’m thinking to do the whole zodiac: one class per season. If this one goes well, summer (Cancer, Leo, Virgo) will be next. Stay tuned.

* If you would like to take the class, but can’t make the times, that’s okay. Recordings of each session and the full syllabus will be available, so still sign up!
