Antidepressants help treat depression or anxiety. They work by increasing the chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain linked to mood and emotion. They help in moderate/severe depression and for anxiety with 50-65% improvement compared to placebo
BENEFIT: They usually take 1-2 weeks (whilst taking every day) before you feel any benefits. Do not stop taking them even if you get mild side effects as these often wear off quickly. By 4 weeks if you have no benefit you may need to change dose or drug. A typical course of treatment is 6 months but others with recurrent symptoms may be advised indefinitely
