STORY BEHIND THE SCHOLARSHIP
The William Jeffrey Bland Scholarship was designed out of the beautiful legacy of Major William Jeffrey Bland, USAF, Retired. His generosity, love for his family, passion for flying, and life vision to be a missionary pilot have sparked this scholarship. His life ended unexpectedly but his legacy continues. His wife, Catherine, and two daughters, Susannah and Sarah Beth, have lived their lives for the Lord and in line with the Bland name. His untimely death brought many to life in Christ and led to a diagnosis of Sarah Beth’s heart condition. He lost his life but literally saved hers. His legacy runs deeply through his daughters and their love of serving in their churches in Collierville, Auburn and globally.
This scholarship will be chosen from applicants who are serving on a mission trip with Be Free Revolution. Each application will be prayed over and chosen from a panel including Major Bland’s widow, Catherine. Catherine, too, has a passion for serving others, pointing those around her to Christ, and living out what it means to live for Christ.
Be Free Revolution is repeatedly humbled by Catherine, Susannah, and Sarah Beth and their perseverance, integrity, and devotion to the call the Lord has on their lives. We are inspired by the life of Major Bland and hope that our lives and those who serve through BFR can leave such a legacy.
HOW IT WORKS
These scholarships will be reviewed thoroughly and will be awarded in the form of mission trip fees reduction to people serving on mission trips through Be Free Revolution.
CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
The individual must possess a desire to discern God’s will and then have the initiative to respond to God’s call. The individual must be seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus, thus naturally being prepared to go out and make disciples of all nations. The individual must be prepared to share a general 5 year plan for his/her life: school, marriage, children, career, missions, etc. - nothing elaborate, but merely a “window” to future plans. Lastly, the individual will be able to share his /her faith story/testimony/“aha moment” with members of the scholarship committee.
