TRAINING DESCRIPTION
The Alaska Native Birthworkers Community (ANBC) is pleased to partner with Center for Indigenous Midwifery and Rhonda Lee Grantham, Indigenous Midwife and Herbalist of Cowlitz Nation (WA), to offer their Indigenous Childbirth Educator training October 27-30, 2022 in Anchorage, AK.

The Indigenous Childbirth Educator Training is Indigenous-focused & Indigenous-centered. The vision of this program is to lift up our Indigenous birthworkers, building capacity from within as we collaboratively increase our skills in service of pregnant & parenting families. Topics include, but are not limited to: Comfort measures for childbirth, traditional foods and medicines for birth, advocacy and empowerment in all birth settings, issues & challenges, maternal-child health statistics, and more!

There will be a four-day in person training accompanied by access to a self-paced online learning module to deepen the knowledge gained and touch on additional topics that aren't included in person. This training is optimized for people who already have some knowledge, awareness and practice of Indigenous birthwork. If new to birthwork, some pre-work will be required to complete prior to attending the training.

ANBC has provided volunteer community birthwork services to members of our Native community for the last four years, and our goal in hosting this training is to grow the number and capacity of Indigenous birth helpers to serve Native Birthing families statewide.

Our mission is to serve Native birthing families to feel supported, well cared for, and full of the information they need to make confident choices around reproductive health, birthing, and parenthood. In doing this, we seek to reclaim as well as create new ceremony and heal our ancestors, ourselves and future generations who may have been harmed through the colonization of our bodies, healthcare, and birthing practices.

TRAINING AUDIENCE
This Indigenous Childbirth Educator Training is open to Alaska Native and Indigenous peoples living in Alaska who are committed to supporting Native birthing and breastfeeding families, and can commit to attending the full four-day training in-person. This is a gender-inclusive space. Please understand that these events are intended to address a specific need in Indigenous communities and that this will be an intimate space to specifically strengthen the capacity of Indigenous peoples. If you are not Alaska Native or Indigenous but would like to support the Alaska Native Birthworkers Community, we invite you to reach out to us to learn about alternate ways of supporting our work.

REGISTRATION FEE
ANBC has done extensive fundraising and has received support to offer this training free of personal financial cost to participants. However, we do require that participants "pay it forward" by volunteering to serve at least one Alaska Native / Indigenous family in their community within a year of completing the training, and that they will report this service back to the ANBC.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Complete application forms are due September 15, 2022. Submitting this application form does not confirm a seat in the training. Participants will be selected and notifications will be sent by September 30, 2022. Application forms received after September 30 will be placed on a waitlist and may be considered if a seat becomes available. Please submit this form only if fully committed to complete the entire training, and keep in touch if plans change so that we may fill all the seats available.

COVID-19 INFORMATION
We are doing our best to evaluate risk and reduce harm in order to gather for this hands-on training as safely as we can during this pandemic. We will depend on all participants to care for each other in this way.
If selected for this training, participants will be asked to:
- share COVID-19 vaccination status
- provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result within 48 hrs (2 days) of the training
- not enter the training with any cold or flu-like symptoms, or after a known COVID-19 exposure within 1 week of the training
- wear a mask while indoors and sanitize hands frequently
