OFE Star Rating System

As a certified OFE, you have the opportunity to earn our highest rating as a 5-star establishment! Please indicate your rating by checking each criterion below that represents your establishment.

Star Levels:
1 Star = 2-3 Criteria Satisfied
2 Stars = 4-5 Criteria Satisfied
3 Stars = 6-7 Criteria Satisfied
4 Stars = 8-9 Criteria Satisfied
5 Stars = 10+ Criteria Satisfied

Optional Criteria to Qualify for Star Levels Listed Above:

The establishment provides paper or non-plastic straws and stirrers when/if straws or stirrers are requested.

“Straws only offered upon request” policy is prominently advertised in the establishment (ex: printed on menu). *This is in addition to the OFE certificate being displayed.

No single-use condiments are provided to customers in establishment.

No Styrofoam is provided to customers.

No beverages are sold in plastic bottles.

The establishment has or will convert from plastic or disposable cutlery and dishware to reusable for onsite dining.

Reusable ramekins are provided for onsite dining.

Vegetarian and/or vegan menu options are provided on a regular basis.

Proper recycling and/or composting bins are provided to customers.

Discounts or incentives are given to customers who bring reusable cups/mugs and/or bags.

Non-plastic recyclable or biodegradable to-go beverage containers are available.

Non-plastic recyclable or biodegradable to-go bags are available.

Non-plastic recyclable or biodegradable to-go food containers are available.

Non-plastic recyclable or biodegradable to-go cutlery.

Disposable to-go cutlery is provided upon request only.

Discarded food is composted.

Bathrooms are equipped with air dryers.

The establishment participates in an “adopt” a beach access or highway program or participates in organized cleanups.

The establishment provides ample and accessible cigarette receptacles for customers and employees.

I am an owner or designated signee of the listed establishment and agree that the establishment will only serve straws upon request. This agreement covers single-use disposable straws made of plastic, biodegradable, and/or compostable materials. I understand that this is an effort to protect the environment by reducing single-use disposable products and plastic pollution.

I accept the Ocean Friendly Establishment certification as given by Plastic Ocean Project, Inc. and NC Aquariums.

I also agree to be listed as an Ocean Friendly Establishment on the websites and social media pages of these organizations.

I agree that the information completed on this form may be shared publicly. This agreement allows for the Ocean Friendly Establishment Campaign to operate with integrity and transparency.

I understand that volunteers may follow up with me, either by email or by visiting the establishment, to offer support for my ongoing commitment to being “ocean friendly.” I have been informed that I may request volunteers to provide brief educational presentations for me and my staff.

I understand that if non-compliance with this agreement becomes a consistent and long-term pattern, OFE representatives reserve the right to remove any establishment from their websites and social media pages.

Congratulations! You will soon receive an email with information regarding the delivery of your OFE certificate. We will also indicate your star rating based on the above criteria. Please allow 4-6 weeks for the processing and delivery of your certificate. Your establishment's name and address will be placed on our OFE website, Plastic Ocean Project's website, and various associated social media accounts. We hope to spread the word about the wonderful environmentally-friendly efforts of your establishment. If you choose to adopt any new sustainable practices, notify us at oceanfriendlyestablishments@gmail.com and we may upgrade your star rating.
