EnviSci Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program - Solicitation for Summer Resources
Dear Department members:

The Environmental Science Department's Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program typically connects EnviSci undergraduates to research opportunities and experiences with our graduate students. Recognizing that COVID-19 has disrupted research opportunities for undergraduates, and in the spirit of supporting learning, the Research Mentoring Program coordinators would like to compile and share a list of resources for our undergraduate students that will encourage engagement with environmental science disciplines and our department during the summer. Along with offering this list, we (the Research Mentoring Program coordinators) are also offering our undergraduate students one-on-one strategy sessions over Zoom to figure out new research goals, drop-in group Zoom hours to stay connected with fellow students, and we’re receiving undergraduate feedback on a few workshops we’re developing.

We invite you to fill out this form to share resources that you’d want our undergraduate students to know about and to have a chance to engage with this summer. Please don't feel pressure to cover everything - we're also gathering resources from other UVA offices (Career Center, Brown Library, Sustainability, Counseling & Psychological Services, etc.).
TYPES OF RESOURCES: We're open to all kinds of resources. The best ones would be those that are freely accessible or accessed by using their UVA account. Resources could be job postings or lists of job postings for summer work (remote or in-person), email Listservs, books, review papers, videos, online courses, virtual conferences, and anything else you can envision helpful for a student who wants to stay engaged in environmental sciences remotely over the summer.
Feel free to list as many resources as you want. Please provide any relevant title/author info, a link if possible, and a quick sentence or two as to why it could be helpful. If you need to share the resource with us via uploading an attachment or you’re not sure how best to share it, please send an email to Kate LeCroy at kal8d@virginia.edu

General categories of resources we hope to include are:
Late-breaking/ongoing summer job postings, Atmospheric Sciences, Geology, Hydrology, Ecology, Grad School Preparation, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Policy, Environmental Justice, Coding/Software/Stats, Recipes/Cooking, Music/Art, Sports/Recreation, and Everything Else. These are not meant to be mutually exclusive nor exhaustive, but they will hopefully help us think more broadly than one specific discipline/category (and who doesn’t want some fun, EnviSci-endorsed recipes to try out over the summer?).
QUESTIONS: Feel free to contact the Research Mentoring Program coordinators with any questions - Elise Heffernan (eh9hg), Clare Rodenberg (cr4rd), and Kate LeCroy (kal8d).

Thank you in advance for your consideration and help with this effort for our undergraduate students.

Sincerely,
Elise, Clare, and Kate
