The best way that we can protect Swifts is to protect their nest sites, and create new nest sites through putting up specially designed boxes. This survey collects information about current nesting locations, and those that have unfortunately been lost.
Nearly all the UK's Swifts nest in buildings, often under eaves and within gables. In Buxton they nest in several parts of town, usually under the eaves of older houses. We would like your help to locate these nest sites.

Swifts are extremely site faithful - once they find a suitable nest site, they continue to use it for the rest of their lives. When a nest site is lost, breeding usually fails.

Swifts are the most aerial of all birds, landing only to nest. They arrive in Buxton in mid May, and leave by August to return to Africa.
'Screaming Parties' are groups of two or more Swifts flying and calling loudly at low level - at or just above rooftop height - indicating they are breeding nearby. Recording these groups helps us to locate nest sites, and site new nest boxes in locations where they are most likely to succeed.
