Camp schedule:
Al-Khalifa Mini Camp Program is a fast-paced and rich program that covers a variety of topics ranging from arts and crafts, astronomy, geography, environment, mythology, architecture and construction. All of this, in just 5 days, amounting to a total of 25 hours of training, playing and interacting with the rich heritage of al-Khalifa!
Day One – Tulun’s Secrets:
Art and crafts day
A tour of Ahmed Ibn Tulun Mosque, and a treasure hunt unveiling the history, architecture and tales of the mosque. Followed by pattern drawing and stucco sculpture workshops.
Day Two - Around the World:
Astronomy and geography day
A tour of Bayt al-Kritliyya to learn about its distinctive architecture and myths, followed by the Bayt al-Kritliyya-themed game, “Around the World”. Participants will connect with the story of Gayer Anderson and his love for collecting valuable items from all over the world. The tour will be followed by astronomy-based activities to learn about ancient time measuring devices.
Day Three – Al-Khalifa Park:
A day surrounded by the natural environment
A tour in al-Khalifa Park to learn about the story of the city floating on water, and how the solution lies at the heart of the issue! The day will be full of agricultural activities, scientific experiments to purify water, and a special printing activity using leaves from the park.
Day Four – Al-Khalifa Treasures:
A day of legends and tales
A treasure hunt in al-Khalifa Street to discover distinctive architectural elements in al-Khalifa neighborhood, its tales and legends.
After the tour, participants will unleash their imagination as they collaborate to create a mural depicting everything they have learned about the area and what makes it special in their eyes. They will also have the opportunity to learn about khiyamiyya, one of the most important traditional crafts in Historic Cairo, and create their own khiyamiyya pieces inspired by their experience!
Day Five – Brick by Brick:
Architecture and Construction Day
A tour through the streets of al-Khalifa among its most prominent monuments, to learn about the architecture of its buildings, and what distinguishes the architecture of each era from the other.
Followed by a workshop on traditional building methods, in which the participants will learn about the difference between traditional and modern construction. They will also have the opportunity to use clay to build some structural elements found in Islamic architecture.
