Volunteer Sign-ups - June/July - Resource Stewardship
Joshua tree watering project - Volunteer to provide supplemental water to 56 Joshua trees and prickly pear cactus that were transplanted into a Beaver Dam Wash fire scar. It may require driving your vehicle about 65 miles roundtrip from the St George area; 5 miles will be over a graded dirt road off of old Highway 91. This will be a recurring need every 2-3 weeks until the new plants are established. You may sign up as you are available. It works best for 2-3 people; one to fill buckets with a hose from a water bladder, and others to haul them up to the plants up to 25 yards away.  This project takes about 3 hours including driving time (1.5-2 hours total driving time; 1-1.5 hours watering on site).

Wildlife monitoring camera servicing project - Volunteers are needed to service wildlife cameras that are in and near the Woodbury Desert Study Area of the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area. Tasks include retrieving photographic data cards from a subset of cameras, installing fresh AA batteries and data cards, ensuring camera and tripod operation and stability, and looking for signs of desert tortoise activity along your hiking route.  This will require hiking over uneven terrain for 1-2 miles, typically to service 4-6, or up to 10 cameras, depending on your desire of involvement.  Recommended to hike/work with another person; CSU can arrange for a partner.  Camera servicing will be performed around the 5th, 15th and 25th day of each month. As the months progress, the camera stewards will head out around 7 am to beat the heat. If you have not received training from Stewardship Coordinator Fred Armstrong, he can train you or pair you up with another trained volunteer.  It will take from 3.5-4 hours, including driving time, to service 4-5 cameras.

Where to Meet - Project volunteers will meet and leave from the Fire Lake/Ivins Reservoir parking lot closest to Old Hwy 91 or from the Terrible's/Chevron at I-15 and Sun River Pkwy.

Once you have provided your availability, Fred will contact you about the days you are needed.  You may contact him at 435-668-2454 with specific questions.

I am interested in reviewing hundreds to thousands of photos on data cards to eliminate non-target images.  I am capable of identifying mammals, reptiles and birds in photos and recording date, time, and species on a data spreadsheet using my home computer. You may perform this task even if you are not capable of retrieving data cards from the field. *
I am willing to sign a waiver to release Conserve Southwest Utah from personal injury or property damage.  I am in good physical health to perform moderately strenuous hiking, lifting, bending and carrying.  I will come prepared with my own personal protective wear of leather gloves, sun protective hat and clothing, closed-toe footwear, and personal hygiene items for packing out human waste.  I will bring a lunch and drinking water sufficient for each day.
