CALL FOR LIGHTNING TALKS:                         "Evaluation methods in Data Science and Machine Learning"  (deadline February 19th)

The 6th Women in Data Science Stockholm 2023 conference is approaching fast (join https://widsstockholm2023.confetti.events/)! In addition to the technical talks and a career panel, as usual, the program includes 6 lightning talks. Each talk is 5 min long followed by 5 min for questions.

The topic this year is “Evaluation methods in Data Science and Machine Learning” - methods of our  day-to-day work which are fundamental to understand and estimate the impact Data Science and Machine Learning have on the product, people and even the society. If you feel that this is your topic and you would like to share your experience with the Data Science, AI and ML community, please tell us more about yourself and send us a short summary of what you’d like to talk about.

What we expect the talk to focus on:

Machine Learning, Data science and Analytics became the must-have disciplines almost at any company and in any industry. Nowadays, the advances in product development, marketing strategies, business strategies are impossible to imagine without heavily relying on the data insights, data-driven estimations and  “ML adoption” or “ML transformation.”  However, we, as experts in the field, need to be sure that the data we use, analysis techniques we apply, models we build are really solving the problem at hand and bring the impact which we expect. This is reflected in our day-to-day work that focuses evaluation, critical analysis and answering some of the most important questions:

  • How do I know that the model I build does what it is set to do?

  • How do I test my idea if building it is too slow and expensive?

  • Is my data enough to solve this problem and how do I confirm it?

  • How do we decide what we need to build next, what brings value here and now and what we need to invest in in the future?

  • How do I know if my marketing campaign/promotion/advertising worked and it was worh the money spent?

These questions never stop, and we need to deal with them every day in order to keep an unbiased view on what we build and suggest to our stakeholders. If you have an interesting experience to share and these questions are your bread and butter, please join us as our lightning talk speaker, we are very much looking forward to hearing from you.

In the lightning talk, we would like you to present a specific method, a problem that this method helped you to solve and what was an evaluation scenario you used this method in.  Topics might include but not limited to:

  • Impact evaluation (Causal inference and counterfactuals)

  • Experimentation and A/B testing

  • Offline machine learning model evaluation. In particular we are interested in simulation methods when a real-time or online evaluation is expensive or impossible to build.

  • Evaluation methods for data and data analysis success

  • Product strategy evaluation (North star KPI, data-driven product development)

Please send your applications on women@wids.se, the deadline is EOD February 19. Looking forward to hearing from you!
