The SMART Mentoring Program is an academic and social initiative program with the primary objective of supporting ALANAM (African-American/Black, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, Alaskan Native, and Multiracial) first-year students in their ability to obtain the highest level of academic achievement and personal success at Elon University. ALANAM first-year students' experience is enhanced by creating a sense of belonging at the University and by getting a personal mentor to ease the transition into the college environment.
Through SMART, student mentors are given a unique opportunity to volunteer their time and shape the Elon experience for new students while enhancing their own personal, academic, and professional development.
SMART mentors will be expected to:
- Participate in trainings to set a foundation for effective peer-peer mentoring, one of which will be held a few days before move-in (we will handle early move-in if you need it).
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings with their SMART family, CREDE Student Coordinators, and CREDE staff.
- Devote at least 5 hours per month on average to face- to-face engagement and active mentoring activities with their first-year students/mentees.
- Participate in assessments of the program and evaluation of their own participation once a semester.
Benefits of being a SMART Mentor
- SMART mentors will receive a stipend of $350 ($175 each semester).
- Enhancing your personal and professional leadership and organizational skills
- Obtaining networking opportunities with faculty, staff, and alumni
- Building and expanding your ALANAM community at Elon
