Student Application for SY20-21 Online Japanese Program

Globalize DC is a local nonprofit organization that works to increase access to global education, language learning, and study abroad for DC public school students. Due to restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been forced to suspend our Japanese Plus afterschool program until a time when face-to-face meetings are possible. In the meantime, for SY2020-21, we are launching a new ONLINE introductory Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program for interested DC public high school students to last until "normal" conditions return (either second semester or next school year).

This new online program will be called JAPANESE TAMAGO (we'll explain the name later). It will include Japanese language instruction, with some exposure to Japanese culture and interesting people who have careers and personal lives connected to Japan. The program will meet once a week for two hours (at a time to be determined), and will begin mid-October. Meetings will be virtual, using ZOOM; students will need to have internet access, and a device that with audio and video capabilities (microphone and camera). Students will be expected to review and practice what they have learned between meetings, but homework will not be heavy for this online program, and no academic credit will be awarded. The program is free.

We will accept up to 30 students, to allow for real interaction and practice speaking. Applicants must be currently attending a DCPS or DC charter high school. Preference will be given to 9th - 11th graders. We always seek a diversity of participants, representing different schools, neighborhoods, and identities.
