The American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization composed of over 70 students and doctors working to raise awareness about lung cancer and lung cancer screening with the hopes of getting high-risk individuals screened for lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. and the world. Lung cancer is so fatal because for many patients, their lung cancer is diagnosed at a late stage, after the cancer has grown and spread. The best way to detect lung cancer is early is through lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (CT). Currently, only 5.7% of high-risk individuals in the U.S. who should be getting lung cancer screening every year are getting this life-saving scan.
