New Economies Reporting Project 2019
GOAL OF THE FELLOWSHIP
The New Economy Coalition is pleased to accept applications for the New Economies Reporting Fellowship. This year, the  fellowship will educate reporters in cross-sector solutions-based reporting on finance. From the Green New Deal to Medicare For All to Universal Basic Income, the latest wave of progressive proposals each aim to solve significant problems through re-envisioning our economy. Even as popular support grows for more radical change, these big ideas for social programs often are defeated in the public arena because of a single, powerful question: how are we going to pay for it?

This project is generously supported by the Park Foundation and New Visions Foundation.

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION
There will be 10-15 New Economies Reporting Fellows in 2019. The Fellowship begins October 1, 2019 and extends to June 30, 2020.

All fellows will receive travel grants to attend a full-day, in-person Solutions Journalism Training followed by the Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy in Baltimore October 17-20, 2019.

Over the course of the next nine months, from November 2019 to July 2020, fellows will attend monthly video calls to discuss their work. These calls will be crafted to support the fellows' projects, and may include guest speakers such as established finance reporters, experts in a particular area, and grassroots organizers working to restructure the economy. Fellows will also be asked to attend occasional press briefings by noted experts in finance around newsworthy events.

Fellows will be added to a Slack channel where potential story ideas and resources will be posted. Fellows will also be added to an NEC Reporting Fellows alumni listserv.

Fellows will receive a $1,000 stipend.

REQUIREMENTS
Fellows participating in the fellowship will be expected to:
1) Attend the in-person training and Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy conference October 17-20 in Baltimore
2) Attend/participate in 75% of the monthly peer learning calls and video briefings
3) Produce 3 - 6 stories over the course of the fellowship year featuring reporting on the economy with a solutions-lens
