INDEPENDENT PHYSICAL EDUCATION (9550a) This course is designed to help students develop proficiency, knowledge, and skills outside of the traditional classroom environment. The licensed Physical Education teacher and the student will design a personal fitness plan that will enable them to improve their fitness and health. The plan will include physical fitness activities, nutritional meal planning, and journaling. The student will earn a .50 (half) credit for completing a minimum of 45 hours of physical activity as part of their plan. Students may utilize time/hours of physical activity for athletic training, dance, conditioning, aerobic activities, running, walking, etc. The 45 hours or more of physical activity is part of the instructional program and is overseen by a licensed Physical Education teacher. Additional hours will be reflected as outlined in the student expectation criteria. Students will log their activities and hours in a fitness journal. There will be a pre and post fitness assessment and the Physical Education teacher will meet regularly with the student as part of the plan. This course can be used as an acceleration option as graduation requirements include 1.50 credits in Physical Education that must be earned in three different years within the four-year high school schedule. Note: Students must take Physical Education 9 before taking Independent Physical Education.
