A survey of the future of the Vermont All State Music Festival.

The challenge in collecting this type of data is that so many aspects are interconnected..... housing, host sites, schedule, number of days. This survey is a first to see what participating teachers & schools would like to see in their All State Music Festival, but in no way will be the end-all answer to all of the questions raised by the Pandemic.

Let's start with the auditions. Which type of audition process would you like to see going forward? *

One day live auditions hosted by a school (as done in 2020)

One day live auditions hosted by a school with an option for remote adjudication done the same day

One day live auditions hosted by a school with an option for remote adjudication done during the following week

One day live auditions hosted by a school with an option to submit recordings instead of attending

All auditions done by submitting recordings (as done in 2021)

For the festival itself, when should it occur?

Traditional days leading up to Mothers Day (second Sunday in May)

One week earlier (last week of April leading to first Sunday in May)

One week later (leading to third Sunday in May)

Two weeks later (leading to fourth Sunday in May)

Three weeks later (leading to first weekend in June)

How long should the festival be?

As it did before, Wednesday to Friday for Jazz, Thursday to Saturday for all others

Thursday to Saturday for everyone

Friday & Saturday only for everyone

Thursday & Friday only for everyone

Monday & Tuesday only for everyone

Two separate festivals on two separate dates, each two days long; One for Jazz & Chorus, another for Band & Orchestra

One day with regional rehearsals for each ensemble (3 hours each on weekends) during the two weeks prior

Location: Should we continue to seek high schools to host this event and move it around the state as best we can

Yes, we should try to bring the festival to as many communities as possible

Yes, but we should look at just those that have access to sufficient local hotels to support housing students

Yes, but we should limit it to four or five and not try to go to every community

No, we should stop seeking host communities and find just two (north - south) who can host every other year

Should we continue to seek local hosts to house our students during the festival?

Yes, let's continue to do this

No, we should not use local hosts at all

Kind of..... we should use local hosts for those that wish that option and arrange for local hotel housing for those that do not

No, and we should reduce the daily schedule so that more schools can transport their students back and forth from their homes

Should we seek a college campus to host the entire event including housing?

Yes, knowing the limitations on locations that would entail

Yes, but the local high school would need to host some portions of the event

No, there are not enough options in Vermont for this to work well for all students

Let's talk finances. Would a festival fee of several hundred dollars be a constraint to some or all of your students participating should they be accepted?

No, funding for our student participants would be able to cover such an increase

Yes, some of our students would not be able to participate

Would you feel it was unfair if there were two different fee levels; One for students who are close enough to transport back & forth OR are provided host housing, and a higher fee for students who need to housed in local hotels?

Yes, that would be unfair and we should not have two different fees

No, the fees should represent the cost associated with supporting each student

Yes, that would be unfair so the additional costs for hotel housing should separately covered by the school

What if one fee were set that generated enough income to cover all student lodging and meal costs? Thus those who were transported or housed locally would pay more so that those staying in hotels would pay less.
