The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome (bacteria that lives within our digestive system) has been shown to impact general health and recent data suggests that it may influence athletic performance. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are supplemented for their potential to improve our overall health. To data, no study has looked at the effects that extreme endurance racing may have on this GI microbiome and if probiotic supplementation has an effect on any response to exercise.
We aim to collect faecal (stool) samples from participants at Ironman Kona 2022 in order to answer the following question:
Does the microbiome change following Ironman triathlon competition?
Are such changes affected by probiotic supplementation
